Dockyard Museum in an old naval officer’s quarters
Located in the heart of Nelson’s Dockyard, you will find the museum.
Nelson’s Dockyard is a cultural heritage site and marina in English Harbour, about a 5-minute drive from the beach houses. It is part of Nelson’s Dockyard National Park, which also contains Clarence House and Shirley Heights, and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
In 1855 the museum as we know it now was built and originally served as the officer’s quarters in the Royal Navy Dock. Restored in the 1970s, the building served as offices for the National Parks before opening its doors as a museum in 1997. You can walk around downstairs and upstairs, where you will learn so much! The museum showcases the history of Nelson’s Dockyard in detail and you will find exhibits that highlight current archaeological and historical research in Antigua. There is also a small “Nelson’s Room” with a life-sized portrait of Nelson researched through archaeological means along with the bed that he slept on.
This museum is also a centre for archaeological research and it also has a research library, offers educational programs, and there is a charming little gift shop. On your way out, there is a sweet bakery in the back that you also have to visit for some lovely fresh bread or treats!
