Appreciation to our environment
We love Antigua & Barbuda and we love the efforts of all who try to protect the environment!
We want to celebrate and acknowledge the important role Marine Biodiversity plays in the cultural, economic and ecological functions of the park. In Antigua & Barbuda, we have a large and growing community that cares about our environment including our ocean life. The Environmental Awareness Group of Antigua and Barbuda @eagantigua is at the top of the list as they have done so much work in order to help protect and conserve nature and wildlife here. We appreciate them and all of their efforts!
Here is a snippet of their background:
“The Environmental Awareness Group, or EAG as it is more commonly known, is a national, voluntary, not-for-profit, non-governmental organization. For some years a small group of local people had strong concerns about the pressures on Antigua- Barbuda’s natural environment. A lead role was played by Desmond Nicholson and Edward T. Henry who were members of the Historical and Archaeological Society – better known as HAS. HAS is the main support group for the Museum of Antigua and Barbuda and other heritage concerns.
On June 9, 1988, the Museum hosted a meeting on environmental matters, coinciding with an environmental exhibit, and a slide show displaying environmental abuse in Antigua-Barbuda.”
They have had multiple successful projects from the past and are in motion. These projects consist of Plant Conservation, Christian Valley Birding Trail, Eastern Caribbean Marine Managed Area Network, Turtle Conservation Project, Body Ponds Nature Park, Offshore Islands Conservation Programme and more. Check out their Instagram page or website to learn more!
https://eagantigua.org/ The Nelson’s Dockyard National Park is filled with a rich and beautiful collection of amazing examples of marine biodiversity to include mangrove wetlands, coral reefs, octopus and eagle rays and so much more. Management of our biodiversity is therefore in everyone’s best interest. It is paramount that we all play our part in protecting the future of marine biodiversity by adhering to park management regulations.
Ruleo Camacho is a Marine Ecologist here in Antigua and Barbuda and has also lent a helping hand along with other scientists and volunteers. At the moment he is focused on bringing marine life back to its fullest potential. There is a coral nursery situated near Pillars of Hercules (a beautiful sight of rock formations minutes away from The Beach Houses) and just two days ago he reported, “Some fragments have increased their sizes by over 500%!!” We commend everyone’s efforts that are involved in this project! Ruleo also has a survey out focused on the importance of mangroves: https://www.nationalparksantigua.com/eco-wetlands/
